Chinese officials have talked about efforts to improve decelerating exports on the opening day of the 113th edition of the China Import and Export Fair— the oldest and biggest trade expo in China.

Speaking on the first day of the spring session of the Canton Fair, Deputy Minister of Commerce Li Jinzao said the fair not only supported export development but also served as a platform to examine and refine policies concerning foreign trade.

To boost the competitiveness of China’s export products, the ministry cited measures like promoting local brands, enhancing export service, improving product quality and supporting technological innovation.

Canton Fair is a major event in the worldwide trade industry gathering Chinese manufacturers and over 400,000 buyers from all over the world.

Meanwhile, foreign buyers attending the oldest and biggest trade expo in China are generally optimistic on China’s export prospects, though some are still cautious on the country’s soaring labor costs.

China recorded a 21.8 percent year-on-year growth in export in February, only to slow down in March to 10 percent—the first trade shortfall since February 2012.

China’s foreign trade and investment is expected to get a boost with the launch of a new e-commerce trade service.

E-cantonfair.com was launched on the first day of the 113th session of the China Import and Export Fair, the biggest bi-annual trade event in China.

China Foreign Trade Center Deputy Director Liu Jianjun, also the spokesperson for Canton Fair, said he has already inked six strategic alliances with international trade associations to further develop the e-commerce platform.

These partners will organize their members to utilize the Canton Fair e-commerce platform and promote it via different channels abroad.

According to China Foreign Trade Center Director Wang Zhiping, the e-cantonfair.com platform will help make the onsite exhibition a year-round trade fair.

Partnerships with foreign commerce organizations are essential to boost the country’s foreign trade and promote manufacturing business, he said, adding that the alliance will help China’s SMEs better utilize the web to promote themselves abroad.

China recorded a 13.4 percent year-on-year increase in foreign trade in the first three months of the year, while exports went up 18.4 percent.

The 113th edition of the China Import and Export Fair aims to boost Chinese exports and promotes the integration of China’s economy with the world.

The opening of the Canton Fair comes amid the country’s economic downturn but a 13.4 percent growth in foreign trade during the first three months of 2013.

About 25,000 companies including 562 from 38 nations are attending this year’s event.

According to Li Jinzao, China’s Vice Minister of Commerce, the fair will further support the expansion of imports, stabilization of exports and the integration of China’s economy with the world.

With an exhibition area of 1.16 million sq m and about 60,000 booths, the event focuses on exports in order to achieve the stable growth of China’s foreign trade, said Li, adding that the nation will try to improve the competitiveness of local firms through technological innovations, home brands promotion, and improvement of quality products and services.

Around 200,000 foreign buyers will likely attend the three-phase event, which will last until May.

The 112th edition of Canton Fair recorded a turnover of US$32.68 billion, down 9.3 percent from the spring session.

Guangzhou plans to re-establish a future exchange by the end of 2015, a move that can lead to the opening of the fifth exchange in the mainland.

The plans aim to help local manufacturers support their pricing capacities when it comes to buying raw materials, said Guangzhou Mayor Chen Jianhua.

China has set up two futures exchanges at two of its three officially recognized economic zones. The eastern Yangtze River Delta region is presently home to the Shanghai Futures Exchange and China Financial Futures Exchange, while the Dalian Commodity Exchange and Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange are near the Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan region.

Meanwhile, the southern Pearl River region, which comprises Guangzhou and other major commercial hubs like Shenzhen and Dongguan, has not hosted future trading for about 15 years.

According to Zhao Yan, a senior analyst with Everbright Futures, Guangzhou is fitted for an exchange considering its dynamic market environment and experience with exchange operation.

The Guangdong capital created two of the country’s first domestic future exchanges in 1993 but officials combined them in 1995 before ultimately shutting it in 1998 amid concerns that widespread speculation was causing market inflation.

As a whole, the Pearl River Delta Region and Guangzhou is home to vigorous spot markets for various bulk goods like refined oil, plastics, steel and grains, said Nie Linkun, deputy director of Guangzhou Financial Services Office.

China Eastern will allow transit passengers to stay in Guangzhou for three days without a visa as part of its “Canton Route” strategy.

Air passengers with a ticket for a third destination will be able to break their trip at the Guangdong capital for three days with no visa, the airline says.

The new visa policy will likely become effective this year at the Guangzhou Baiyun Airport for travelers from 45 nations.

The airline first implemented its 72-hour transit visa-free scheme on January 1 for Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Beijing Airport.

The move is expected to boost the airline’s “Canton Route” between Asia, Australia and Europe.

The route will operate as a shortcut providing a link between Asia, Australia and Europe.

Passengers between Australia and Europe will save two hours of their travelling time by transferring at Guangzhou instead of Shanghai or Beijing, the airline claims.
